The Adventure of English, by Melvyn Bragg -- the biography of a language, its tastes and desires, its past and its dreams for the future, the way it lives and breathes and moves... That such a language could still dance its pretty patterns around us. And! Furthermore! That other languages derive from the same origins -- the Romantic lilts of French and Italian, the broader dialects of a Germanic tongue, all blend together to form this thick gooey paste which drips over our tongues, asking us to speak this...what? This English. Such a word! Only twenty six letters! Ah, the possibilities. It means it is not necessary to remember the old languages, the Latins and the Ancient Greeks, because they live on. Horribly mutated, transformed into some hideous half formed beast yes, but still living, and still breathing, and still the most powerful of creatures to date. Still the most powerful of creatures, the strongest, the most lonely. (For secretly, English wishes for the Latins and the Ancient Greeks of time past; it is such a drag being the best language in the world. It is so much pressure!)
I am Eden.
